To enable you to enrol, you must present evidence of health insurance. For recognition of cover under the "official" health care system of their home country, students from EU member countries require one of the following forms: E 111 or E 128 (available at the health insurance body in your home country). You must then take this form to one of the "statutory" health insurance funds in Münster (see below), who will issue you with an insurance number and an insurance exemption certificate. You simply continue paying the contributions to the health insurance system in your home country.
If you need to consult a doctor in Münster, the health insurance fund you have chosen will provide you with an entitlement form ("Berechti-gungsschein") and will pay the treatment costs, which it will then reclaim from the health insurance body in your home country.
The foreign health insurance bodies usually stipulate a fixed insurance period for the stay abroad (between 3 and 12 months). At the end of this period, you will need a new confirmation on the E 111 or E 128 form. If you are privately insured, you should clarify all details for a longer stay abroad with the insurance company in your home country.
Students who are not from EU countries must insure themselves with a German health insurance fund for ca. Euro 315 per semester (six months). If you come from a state with a Social Insurance Agreement you do not pay this subscription, but you need to register this at the Techniker Krankenkasse (Local Insurance Scheme), University Restaurant, Mensa II, Coesfelder Kreuz, 48149 Münster (Mon - Fri 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.) Tel.: +49 (0) 251 53 00 62 06 / 7, www.tk-online.de or at any other relevant insurance institution.
According to regulations in the law, students who have already studies more than 14 semesters or are over thirty years old can only be voluntarily insured at higher costs.
Whether and to what extent you are insured if you decide to travel to other countries from Germany is a matter you need to clarify with your health insurer.
Because of the very high medical fees and hospital charges in Germany, you are urgently advised to ensure that you have adequate health insurance cover. Further information on this can be obtained from the health insurance funds.
